7 Pet Safety Tips

When taking care of our beloved pets, it can be easy to forget some of the basic steps for keeping them safe and healthy. Here are 7 tips on how to make your environment safer for your furry friends.

  1. Keep food and medications secure.
Some pets love to get into EVERYTHING. Make sure that all human food and medications are stored securely in cabinets or containers that are not accessible to your pets. Some human foods, such as chocolate, grapes, and onions, can be toxic to pets, so keep those extra out of reach.

  2. Provide safe chew toys.
Most dogs love to chew, and it's essential to provide them with safe chew toys to prevent them from chewing on household items that could be dangerous (or costly!) to replace. Kong offers durable and safe toys that can help satisfy your pet's natural urge to chew and keep them entertained. Plus you can put a little peanut butter inside and your dog will go nuts for it ;) (Note: be sure that your peanut butter isn’t sweetened with xylitol, which is toxic to dogs!)

3. Secure hazardous areas.
There might be certain areas in your home that just aren’t safe for your pets. While most pet gates won’t keep out an intrepid cat (only a closed door can guarantee that), you can ensure “no dogs allowed” with the Carlson Extra Wide Pet Gate. Its steel design guarantees that even heavy chewers won’t be able to get through those bars.

4. Use flea and tick prevention.
Fleas and ticks are not only a nuisance but can also transmit diseases to your pets. Regularly check your pet's fur for any signs of fleas or ticks and consult your veterinarian for the best prevention methods.

5. Keep pet areas clean.
Maintaining clean pet areas is crucial for your pet's health and hygiene. Nature’s Miracle offers pet-friendly cleaning solutions to help you keep your home clean and odor-free. Regularly clean your pet's bedding, litter box, and food and water bowls to prevent the buildup of germs and bacteria.

6. Use a car seat.
In the tragic event of an accident, you want your precious pets to have the best chance of making it out in one piece. Outward Hound’s PupBoost Dog Car Seat keeps your dog secure while also giving them a nice view out the window.

7. Keep them harnessed.

Exercise is vital for pets, but letting your pets go off-leash is a recipe for disaster. Harnesses can also be safer than collars for securely taking your pets on outdoor adventures. The RabbitGoo No Pull Dog Harness is an excellent choice for walking the pup without fear of escape. If you’re walking your feline friend, never fear — RabbitGoo has a vest style cat harness, too (hopefully you’ve got a cooperative kitty!).

There’s so much more to pet safety, but with these 7 tips at the ready, your pets should be in good hands!
